How much does gutter cleaning cost?

There's no single price for cleaning gutters, because no two houses are the same height, length or shape. This guide explains what goes into a quote, what a typical home can expect to pay, and when gutter guards work out cheaper than repeat visits.

The short answer

Most homes fall within a fairly narrow range, and the height of the house and how easy the gutters are to reach move the price more than anything else.

To confirm with Blue Shield: Typical price range for domestic gutter cleaning, from a small bungalow to a large detached house.

What changes the price

When we price a job we're working out how long it will take and what equipment it needs to do it safely. These are the things that make the difference:

  • House type and height: a bungalow can often be done from the ground or a short ladder, while a three-storey townhouse needs more kit and more care.
  • Gutter length: a detached house with gutters on all four sides has far more run to clear than a mid-terrace with a front and back.
  • Access: conservatories, extensions, steep gardens, narrow side passages and parked cars all make it harder to get to the gutters.
  • How blocked they are: a routine clear-out is quick; gutters packed with years of moss, silt and even small plants take much longer.
  • Downpipes and outlets: a blocked downpipe has to be cleared too, or the gutter will simply fill up again.
  • Extras: garages, outbuildings and conservatory gutters, or a roof clean on the same visit.

Typical prices by property type

As a starting point, here's what we usually charge for a standard clear-out of gutters and downpipes. Your quote may be higher or lower depending on the points above, and we'll always tell you the price before we start.

Emptying versus gutter guards

Emptying clears what's already in the gutter. If your house sits under trees, the gutters can be full again within a season, and you're paying for the same job over and over.

Gutter guards cost more up front, but they stop most leaves, moss and twigs getting in while the rain still runs through. For homes that block often, guards usually work out cheaper over a few years because the gutters need clearing far less. They aren't completely maintenance-free, so a quick check once a year is still sensible.

If your gutters only collect a little debris, regular emptying is likely to be the better value. We'll tell you honestly which makes sense for your house when we look at it.

Questions we're asked

Is gutter cleaning worth it?

For most homes, yes. A blocked gutter overflows down the walls, into the roofline and around the foundations, and the damp and rot that follow cost far more to put right than the clean itself. Many home insurers also expect gutters to be maintained, so keeping them clear can help if you ever need to make a claim.

How often should gutters be cleaned?

It depends on what's around your house. Gutters near trees fill much faster than those on an open street, and late autumn, once the leaves are down, is the usual time to have them done. If water spills over the edge when it rains, they're overdue.

To confirm with Blue Shield: Blue Shield's recommended cleaning interval for a typical home, and for one under trees.

Can I clean my gutters myself?

On a bungalow or a low extension, plenty of people do it themselves, and it's fine if you're steady on a ladder and careful. Use a ladder that's in good condition on firm, level ground, have someone foot it, and don't lean out to reach: move the ladder instead.

Higher gutters are a different matter. Working above the first floor, over a conservatory or on uneven ground is where most ladder accidents happen, and it's the point where we'd suggest paying someone with the right access equipment and insurance.

Do you clean the downpipes too?

Yes. Clearing the gutters is only half the job if the downpipes are blocked, so we clear the outlets and downpipes as well and check the water runs away freely before we leave.

What is gutter clearance?

Gutter clearance is just another name for gutter cleaning or emptying: removing the moss, leaves, silt and debris so rainwater flows to the downpipes. We also tell you about any cracked, sagging or leaking sections we spot while we're up there.

Is the quote really free?

Yes. We'll look at your gutters and give you a price with no obligation to go ahead.
